Delirium

Delirium Tremens
Brouwerij Huyghe
Belgian Strong Pale Ale 8.5% ABV
Belgium

When a family Brewery has been around since 1654, it either has the funds to continue operations given the product is at least good or the brewery is still going cause it has some great tasting quality beer that seems to be popping up all over the place. Delirium tremens has a light amber color with a three finger head. Delirium tremens smells yeasty and floral and has a nice presence of hops. The taste is crisp and vibrant with a lot of carbonation, it starts out sweet and fruity with hints of apple and pear then finishes medium dry with hints of nuts and clove spice. Delirium tremens is a delicious beer with great flavors and balance. With this Belgian ale comes a higher level of alcohol content and price higher than most beers, a must try for beer lovers.

Portland being part of the handful of cities that has changed the US craft beer culture for the better, it’s not a surprise that Widmer is a product of this area. Widmer is a Hefeweizen beer that has a hazy golden look and a couple fingers of head. The beer is fresh and has pleasing flavors of citrus, especially lemon zest. Has a fairly clean taste that includes a bready-yet-tart wheat touch and finishes with a hint of grapefruit.

Widmer is a good summer style beer to enjoy that has a nice quenching quality.

Rodenbach Grand Cru

Rodenbach Grand Cru

Flanders is famous for its unusual sour red ales, and Rodenbach is certainly the region’s super star. The Belgium “Grand Cru” is aged in large oak casks for at least two years before being blended with 1/3 of a younger batch which results in both smoky oak and toasty flavors in the process. The red ale also suggests citrus fruit and sour cherry flavor. This is an exceptional beer with food that includes intense flavors that burst on the palate.

Egg Whites in Cocktails

ramos gin frizz

Cocktails made with raw egg whites aren’t as popular as they once were. At the end of the 19th century, New Orleans’ Ramos Gin Frizz was the craze. If you’ve recently been to upper-end cocktail bars, where they specialize in fine hand-crafted drinks, you’ve noticed a comeback. It seems that raw egg white infused cocktails have found their way back into some spectacularly elegant drinks. Shaken thoroughly and briskly, egg whites give drinks a wonderfully silky and light frothiness. It adds texture and volume to a cocktail. Drinks with whole eggs in them such as the Pisco Sour and the Los Angeles Cocktail have a creamy, rich consistency without the excess of actual cream.

When you find yourself among a group of people of the same profession, a few common questions always arise. Salesmen will ask “how many sales do you average a month?” and lawyers always want to know “what firm do you work with?” The same is true with bartenders and mixologists. Being a part of many conversations with bartenders, it seems after the initial “where do you work” and “how long”, comes the question of “do you get these aches too..?”
